Title: Family Literacy Program @ Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center --
Summary: This year the President's Signature Project was Basic Education and Literacy. Included in the overall project is the Family Literacy Program at the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. Many of society’s problems - unemployment, poverty, and increased incarceration rates- can be linked back to the individual decision to quit high school. The Family Literacy Program goal is to get more adults not only their GED but to offer life skill such as budgeting, goal setting, communications and networking, study skills and strategies in the program. The program also looks to create community among student --more accountability among each and a sense of belonging to help combat the national problem of adult student retention. The Family Literacy Program at Ray & Joan Kroc is recognized as one of the best adult literacy programs in the Atlanta area. Our funding will support laptops for student use, LCD projectors for the instructor, the CBT 100 Computer Skills Software and a calculator library. This equipment helps teach the “soft skills needed for each student to pass the new GED test. Alpharetta Rotarians will participate in the Life Skills segment of the Program which is a series that presents students with pertinent skills outside of the traditional classroom. We'll also have the opportunity to serve at events such as Reaching Out to Read. Adults and child of all age come and participate by listening to stories and books and engaging in activities around reading.
